MAPS OR HOW NOT TO GET LOST….

It is impossible to find a good paper road map of the countryside around San Miguel de Allende. Having been at this for more than five years, we have several suggestions if you are contemplating a road trip to visit ranchos and capillas out of San Miguel.

  • Buy the paper map of San Miguel de Allende that has a quarter page map on the back titled: Municipio de Allende. This smaller map shows the relative locations of the many, many ranchos near San Miguel. Our blog is organized by rancho.
  • DEFINITELY THE BEST   Use Mapa Digital de Mexico to find details of roads, mileages and GPS locations of the ranchos you want to visit.
  • Buy Robert de Gast’s book The Churches and Chapels of San Miguel de Allende. Although out of print, it can be purchased from Amazon or other sources. In the back of the book is a list of all the ranchos in the county of San Miguel where he found capillas and the number of capillas in each rancho. It is a great resource.
  • Check out the local San Miguel Audubon Society website for their Rio Laja Trail Guide. The Rio Laja Trail is a walking and biking trail following the banks of the Rio Laja in San Miguel de Allende, GTO, Mexico, from the Presa Ignacio Allende to approximately Dolores Hidalgo. It spans 32.43 miles/ 51.9 kilometers and covers on foot or bike the same countryside we are traveling in by car. If you are a birder, this will be invaluable.
