Calvario in Cruz del Palmar T. McIntosh
Friends in San Miguel and those planning to visit soon….remember our book “The Capillas of San Miguel de Allende: A Legacy of Faith.” Many of you have been asking for a tour out in the countryside that visits some of the capillas featured in the book.
FOLLOW ME TOURS of San Miguel de Allende has just started offering a tour using the book as a guide.
“San Miguel de Allende, besides its great architectural beauty, good climate and cultural ambience, is home to a large number of historical chapels and calvaries in nearby, predominantly Otomi, indigenous communities. There are more than 300 of these chapels in the municipality of San Miguel de Allende.”

Capilla in Oaxaca T. McIntosh

Capilla near Monticello de Nieto T. McIntosh
“The tour will visit several capillas in or near the following five small communities: Montecillo de Nieto, Banda, San Isidro de Bandita, Oaxaca, and Cruz de Palmar. The tour covers about 20 kilometers of rough road through the picturesque rural landscape. Each chapel is definitely worth the drive. One of the calvaries is on top of a hill overlooking the nearby town, cemetery and rural landscape. Some of the chapels are still in use and are clearly the center of their communities; others are abandoned. It is unlikely that the capillas will be open.”
A copy of the book “The Capillas of San Miguel de Allende: A Legacy of Faith” which has historical details and watercolors of each capilla is included as part of the tour.
4.5 hours duration; $65 USD; minimum of 2 people to guarantee the tour; English and Spanish
